The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautiful story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan grow up together but in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant, is a Hazara -- a shunned ethnic minority. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him.
Amir and Hassan’s idyllic life in Kabul reminded me of my childhood. Every day I played different games with my friends in different places and we did nearly everything together. At that time, everyone thought that we would do everything together forever. However, it could never be real. We came from different families and we were supposed to do different things in our future. Even though we played together when we were children, we lead a different life consequently. As we grew up, we went to different primary school and then different middle school. After graduation from middle school, some of us chose to go to technical secondary school, some chose to work and the other chose to continue their education in different high school. Every graduation is a parting time, because few of us went to the same school after that. Gradually, we found we were living a life in completely different ways and we had less and less in common and we even didn’t know what to talk about when we were together. It’s changing all the time. We can never go back to the life we played together. It’s quite the same as what Amir and Hassan had told, they could never fly and run for kites together. As a matter of fact, Amir could never meet Hassan after Hassan left.
Everyone is kind of Amir. When he was young he felt angry and even jealous when he found his father showed his love to Hassan, his servant’s son. He was anxious to know his father didn’t love him only. It’s nature. Nobody wants to share love with others and nobody was born selfless. Just think for a while, we can remember a lot of scenes that we didn’t feel happy when we knew our love was shared in our childhood and they were probably happened without any reasons. We might think it’s ugly, but it’s improper. We did do that when we were very young unconsciously and we didn’t need to be ashamed of that. However ,as we grew up, we were taught to help others whenever they need and we did that and our world became more beautiful. If we were found too selfish, it might be a failure of education. It can be concluded as doctrine of evil human nature by Xun Zi thousands of years ago.
As a servant, Hassan showed his absolute loyalty to Amir. For you a thousand times over. It’s this sentence that moved me to tears. Hassan helped Amir fly the kite, run for the kite and even fight against the bully. He did everything for Amir. It’s also his nature. He did that because he knew he was a servant and he was told to do that. Loyalty is a big word. Dogs are loyal to their masters and soldiers are loyal to their country. Loyalty often comes with sacrifice. Loyalty is rarely heard nowadays as we tend to mind our own business. For one thing, people are more realistic now. For the other, people don’t easily trust in others. We can’t tell whether it’s good or bad.
The opposite of loyalty is betrayal and betrayal is often unforgivable. Amir was a boy who wouldn’t stand for himself, so he failed to stand for Hassan, his servant and good friend, when he really needed his help. It’s really unbelievable of him to leave Hassan behind, suffering insult that could have been avoid. I couldn’t understand! Since Hassan had done so much for Amir, why Amir couldn’t do something for him to save him? It’s depressing that he did nothing but go away. Even though he felt guilty in the rest of his life, nothing can make it erased from his memory. What has been done cannot be undone. Sometimes we may have to suffer a lot for the rest of our life if we don’t make a proper decision at some moment. Every decision will make a difference. College Entrance Exam is a good example. Countless people’s life changed completely after that fatal exam. They are helpless to accept the truth later in their life. Sometimes a decision made in a second has an influence on the whole life.
The Kite Runner is a story of redemption. Amir went back to Afghanistan 20 years after he left to America. “There is a way to be good again.” Obviously, Amir’s father’s business partner knew something about what he had done. He was trying to help Amir to be good again. However, he can never find Hassan because Hassan had left him forever. What he can do is to help Hassan’s orphaned son out of the terrible living condition. Some people make every effort to do something to help what they had done before, but most of them in vain. Everyone should pay for what he did. It’s tragic but we are helpless.
The novel is destined to make us think a lot. We see kind of ourselves from the book. And we also see hope in Afghanistan, a land of war.
Friendship and love also exist on the land, around us.
